What to do in case of loss of objects on public transport in Rome

If you have lost a document, a bag, a mobile phone, an umbrella, a camera or any object of your property on public transport in Rome, do not despair. There are procedures to follow to try to find your property and to avoid any penalties or problems. In this article, I will explain what to do based on the public transport operator on which you lost the item.

ATAC

ATAC is the public operator that takes care of most of the surface vehicles (buses, trams, trolleybuses) and of the A, B, B1 and C underground lines.
If you have lost something on one of these vehicles, you can contact the competent office:

Surface transport

Roma Capitale is responsible for finding lost objects on surface public transport. We therefore invite you to consult the appropriate page of the 060608.it website which indicates all the necessary contacts and links to the dedicated pages of the Roma Capitale website.

Metro Lines A, B/B1, and C

For the retrieval of lost items in the metro, you can contact the new unified office at EUR Fermi station on Line B - tel. 06.46955105.

Public opening hours:
10:30-13:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

With the opening of the new office, the old locations at Giulio Agricola (Line A) and Piramide Porta San Paolo (Line B) will no longer be in operation.

To collect the lost item, you will need to present a valid identity document and a loss or theft report (if you have one). In addition, you will have to pay a fee of 4 euros for custody fees and 5 euros for preliminary investigation and research fees. If the object is collected after 30 days from the acquisition, a fee of 15 euros will be added for the deposit. If, on the other hand, you want to receive the item at home, you will have to pay the same rates plus shipping costs and send a written communication with a copy of your identity document and the payment receipt to the lost property office.

COTRAL

COTRAL is the public operator that deals with extra-urban connections between Rome and the neighboring provinces.
If you have lost something on one of the COTRAL buses, you can contact the toll-free number 800 174 471 or fill in the online request form on the homepage of the cotralspa.it website.
You will have to provide all the data relating to your journey (date, time, line, stop) and the description of the lost item. If the object is found, you can pick it up at the COTRAL office closest to the place of discovery, upon presentation of a valid identity document and the report of loss or theft (if you have made one). There are no fees to pay for the collection of the object.

ROMA TPL

ROMA TPL is the consortium of private companies that manages some surface lines in Rome.
If you have lost something on one of the ROMA TPL buses, you can call 06 64 7781 or send an email to info@romatpl.it. You will have to provide all the data relating to your journey (date, time, line, stop) and the description of the lost item.
If the object is found, you can pick it up at the ROMA TPL office in Via Antonio Fontanesi, 24, 00155 Rome RM, upon presentation of a valid identity document and the report of loss or theft (if you have made one). There are no fees to pay for the collection of the object.

Altri gestori

In addition to the three main operators, there are other companies operating in public transport in Rome, such as Trenitalia, which manages the regional railway lines. If you have lost something on one of these vehicles, you can consult the respective companies' websites for contact information and how to collect lost items.
In general, we advise you to follow these steps:

  • Contact the operator of the vehicle on which you lost the item as soon as possible, providing all the useful details for identification and return.
  • Report the loss or theft to the competent authorities, if the object has an economic or personal value.
  • Periodically check the list of lost objects on the 060608.it website or on the websites of public transport operators.
  • Pick up the item at the office indicated by the operator, presenting a valid identity document and the report of loss or theft (if you have made one).
  • Pay any fees provided by the manager for the rights of custody, investigation, research or deposit of the object.

If you are not sure whether your object was found by one of these operators, you can consult the list of lost objects on the 060608.it website, in the section dedicated to the service. The list is periodically updated and contains the description of the objects, the date and place of discovery and the reference of the competent office.
